Channel setting is a method where stones are placed in a continuous row between two parallel metal walls, creating a sleek, modern look without visible prongs. This technique is often used for eternity rings and wedding bands.
In this course, run by master setter Marcel Solloum, you will learn to use 90° bearing burs and small round burs to open and shape the channels, ensuring a precise fit for the stones. We will then secure them using hammer drills, refine the borders with bright cutting, and complete the setting by cleaning and shaping the outer edges with rubber wheels for a seamless, elegant finish.
Who is this course for?
This course is recommended for those who already have some jewellery making skills and wish to add new skills for traditional setting to their repertoire.
What to bring
All tools and basic materials are provided, including sterling silver blanks to practice setting on.
Some students may find it helpful to use magnifying headbands during the class, depending on how good their eyesight is. We will have some available in the studio, but if you have your own please bring it with you, if you can.
If you bring your own pieces in which you wish to set stones this will help the tutor to advise you towards achieving your own goals. However, the necessary skills require dedicated practice over time so the tutor will be aiming to maximize your learning with exercises and set tasks rather than support with individual projects.
About the tutor
This course will be run by Marcel Salloum. Marcel started in the trade aged 16 as a trainee diamond setter in his home town of Beirut, taking a part-time job before committing to the industry full time at 18. After a further three years of experience, Marcel left his home country for the UK in 2005 and began working in Hatton Garden, specialising in setting. Four months later, he set up his own business, that is now renowned for quality, reliability, innovation and design. Marcel has built his workshop to both provide trade services to other jewellers and design and make his own bespoke commissions in various precious metals and stones.
