About the course

This intensive one-day workshop provides an engaging introduction to the world of gemstones and gemmology. Combining scientific theory with practical experience, the course explores how gemstones are formed, sourced, identified, graded, and valued.

Participants will gain hands-on experience using key gemmological tools and examining a wide range of gemstones, including diamonds and coloured stones.

Topics covered include:

  • Introduction to gemmology and the world of gemstones

  • Gemstone formation and physical/optical properties

  • Responsible sourcing, traceability, and environmental considerations

  • Diamond and coloured gemstone mining and production

  • Artisanal mining case study in Sri Lanka

  • Gem identification using instruments and inclusions

  • Practical gemstone testing and analysis

  • Diamond and coloured gemstone grading and valuation

  • Pricing factors and gemstone buying guidance

A gemstone reference book (RRP £12.99) is included in the price. 

Students need only bring their energy and enthusiasm, plus something for making notes. Everything else will be provided.

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for complete beginners to the subject and will also interest those with some previous knowledge, such as jewellery makers who want to learn more about the materials they use.

About the tutor

The course will be led by Stuart Pool, a specialist in responsibly mined and fully traceable coloured gemstones, mainly sourced directly from mines in Sri Lanka and Tanzania. He runs gem trading companies Nineteen48, Rubyfair and Crown Gems, as well as being one of the co-founders of Fair Luxury, a group focused on positive change in the jewellery industry and a key member of the Moyo Gemstones project.
