This course will provide you with the foundation of technical design, jewellery knowledge and production skills to begin your jewellery career.

About this course: K2’s Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design is an intensive beginner’s course that has been designed for students who wish to obtain a diverse range of creative techniques, jewellery making and design skills.

Through a series of practical projects you will be taught to refine your jewellery making skills to a high professional standard, while at the same time developing your critical thinking and creative response to the design process. By the end of the course you will have built a capsule collection of jewellery pieces or small design objects.

Course outline: The course is divided into three terms spread across one year:

Term 1 - Colour and Texture

Modules include: Introduction to practical 3D skills including cutting, soldering, bending and filing Surface decoration Introduction to sketching, drawing and experimenting with visual language Sketchbook development and basic research skills
Introduction to critical analysis and contextual awareness

Term 2 - Material Exploration Modules include: Develop, design and make your own project in Polymorph, wax, and wood Introduction to basic casting techniques such as sandcasting and water casting
Brooch backs and findings Introduction to the basics of metallurgy

Term 3 - Form and Shape Modules include: Producing a personal project: design and develop your own small collection Metal deformation – hollow container tube and hinges
Analysis and evaluation methods Exhibition preparation and set up

Contextual awareness, problem solving and critical thinking are an integral part of the course and will run parallel to the other projects.

In addition to the taught sessions there will be field trips to different industry related companies, museums and galleries to further enrich your learning experience.

Progression: By the end of the course you will be ready to progress to the K2 Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design

Who is this course for? Students who have already completed the K2 Level 2 Award in Art & Design or equivalent and professional jewellers wishing to broaden their skills and knowledge base.
