Caroline Palmer

Caroline Palmer has completed a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Jewellery at K2 Jewellery Academy in 2019 and is currently continuing her jewellery education on our project-based courses, where she explores jewellery techniques such as casting and press forming. Having worked as a journalist throughout her professional career, she now applies her academic background and research in her jewellery practice, with particular interest in sociology, personal experience, emotions and the unconscious mind.

Artist’s statement about her work: 

My jewellery is an exploration of identity and what it means: to be a woman, mother, wife, friend, Jew, lover, and to be none of those things. It is the result of a deep dive into my unconscious mind where desires, memories and emotions reside. What I bring to the surface is given form through an aesthetic that is itself a product of that unconscious brew; my designs forming part of a virtuous circle. It is a playful and a profound process for me.

My ‘Brainwave’ rings began with my delight at the wild, exuberant shapes of the Turkish hazelnut husks littering the ground of a neighbour’s front garden. But my inspiration came when I saw how those shapes resembled images of the inner workings of the brain, in particular the neurons’ electrical communications through the synapses that are so important for our memory. The cast silver fronds of the husks, that form the main part of the ring, are like a thought impulse frozen in time. The gems within their fingers, the jewels within each of us.

About the experience at K2 Academy:

Being a student at K2 has been a life-changing experience. Katrin Spranger and Kelvin Birk, both internationally renowned jewellers, have taught me a broad range of technical skills, helping me to achieve a level of competence that I did not think I was capable of. But even more importantly is the generosity with which they have supported me, and all their students, to develop as creative individuals, always challenging us to look at the world in new ways.
